VIDEO BONANZA: new clips from our past Scene Beaters

Well, looky here: all three of our past SCENE BEAT guests have released videos this week. Let’s check ‘em out!

The Connection: My first SCENE BEAT guest, Chris Faulkner, dropped by to talk about his work drumming for the Jonee Earthquake Band, but now it looks like he’s got another project going, too. The Connection just released their first single, Stop Talking and I like its 60’s pop vibe a lot. I also can’t help but crack as smile at the breezy “Meet the Beatles” feeling of this DIY video:

Nanosaur: So far, most of the videos Nanosaur has put out are overdubbed footage snagged from vintage clips or simply a static image, so it’s really cool to see this clip of Nanosaur doing his thing on his song T33n Dayze. There’s a video for Want You coming out soon, too, so keep your eyes peeled for that.

New Animal: Here’s some cool footage of a house party Kris and Derek of New Animal played last weekend. I’d be lying if I said that accordion doesn’t make my heart skip a beat. Also, I’m really intrigued by the meowing at the end of this video. Is “meow” now the preferred way to praise the band when you have one hand full of drink? Or is their cameraman actually a cat?

Radioculars playlist 3/11/11

This week’s show marked the first anniversary of Radioculars on WMWM. To celebrate, I asked some of my favorite listeners and fellow deejays to help me create sets of songs they’ve enjoyed hearing/discovering on the show over the past year.

Sunglasses – Whiplash
The KVB – Lost
We Are Trees – Colorado
Puberty – Invitations

My first tribute set was for listener Brian Temple, a software consultant and founder of the up-and-coming site, who tunes in from Denver. I take full credit for turning him onto Nanosaur. To repay the favor he introduced me to Four Loko, which resulted in me blacking out and flipping off a waiter in an upscale sushi restaurant. (See, you have to tune in to hear these stories!) Here’s the set he picked out:

Future Bible Heroes – I’m Lonely and I Love It
Nanosaur – Bravery
Chaz  Jankel – Number One
Meyer Hawthorne – Maybe So, Maybe No
Ducktails (featuring Panda Bear) – Killin’ the Vibe

Next, I saluted fellow long-time WMWM deejay and all around great guy, Scott Gorke. I met Scott back when he was a deejay-in-training in 1996, and ever since then he has hosted Everything You Know is Wrong Fridays on WMWM from 7am - 9am. (That has to be some sort of record!) Here are some songs he’s given me the thumbs up for playing:

Kingsley Flood – Cul de Sac
Tame Impala – I Don’t Really Mind
Dum Dum Girls – Jail La La
Blonde Redhead – Top Ranking
Marnie Stern – For Ash

Were there a “Most Dedicated Listener” award, it would go to Allan Hough, creator of the popular San Francisco blog Mission Mission. Maybe he doesn’t always get to tune in live, but he always has great music recommendations and is in general a big champion of college radio. He also gets mad props for reuniting Mr. Creep with Lalita (and being the only person to get why pairing those to songs up a few months ago was funny in the first place) We both simultaneously came up with sets for him, so I squashed them together:

tUnE-yArDs – Bizness
Navajo Bixby – Down Under
Spur – Mr. Creep
The Love Language – Lalita
Wave Machine – The Greatest Escape We Ever Made
Cheap Time – People Talk

Okay, I swear I’m not just saying this because the host is also our music director: The Doppler Shift, a most excellent weekly exploration of the history of garage rock, is one of my favorite shows on WMWM right now. And I think the feeling is mutual…DJ Chris Faulkner often participates in the weekly Radioculars listening party that takes place in the Marsh dorms. That’s how I know he really digs these tunes:

Reading Rainbow – Always On My Mind
Hunx and his Punx – Too Young to Be in Love
Girls Names – Séance on a Wet Afternoon
Thee Oh Sees – I Was Denied
Silver Shampoo – Streaks of Satan

Hailing from New York City, Tim Palin is my creative hero. He often tunes in while banging out top notch work from his office, Tim Palin Creative. As if that wasn’t enough, Tim is also an avid baker, and he dabbles in embroidery, running a blog and Etsy shop, both called Brooklyn Needles. I took some liberties with his set, but I don’t think he’ll mind:

Rollerskaters – In the Dark
Holy Ghost Party – Toys
Concorde – Candy Boy
Bandit Kings – The Jerker
Land of Talk – Quarry Hymns

And finally, I’d be remiss if I didn’t recognize Radioculars’ MVP: Forrest Guest. As my silent cohost, each week he helps me round up downloads, burn cds, and other technical hooey. Without him, there would be no show…or maybe there would be, but it would be horribly disorganized. He’s not even all that into music, which only makes his dedication to more impressive. But over the past 12 months these songs have certainly tickled his fancy:

Madcon – Beggin’
Yalls – Germs
Hank & Cupcakes –Ain’t No Love
The Living Sisters – How Are You Doing?
Casiotone for the Painfully Alone (feat. Dear Nora) – Hot Boyz

That concludes all my cheesy gushing. I appreciate all the people who have tuned in, made requests, and have been supportive of the show. Thanks to WMWM for getting me back on the air! I’ve had an awesome time this year and I’m psyched to dig into another year of rad music.

Purity Ring – Ungirthed
Raw Thrills – Making Love on a Piano
Beach House – 10 Mile Stereo
Toshio Hirano – Peach Picking Time in Georgia

Hello from WMWM, Salem

Hey, Cosmic Amanda here. I do a weekly radio show called Radioculars. And this is its brand new Tumblr.

I work in a cubicle all week listening to and reading about music. Then at the end of the week, I schlep down to my favorite college radio station, WMWM Salem and share all of my favorite things I’ve found.

There are a ton of totally rad music blogs out there, heaps of great labels and countless amazing bands. (many of which I’ll provide links to soon) My hope is that my radio show (and now this Tumblr) will help you discover something new and awesome.
